Shockwave therapy is a new unique non-invasive treatment modality for chronic musculoskeletal pain. With a maximum of 5 – 6 treatments needed at 5 – 7 day intervals, depending on the severity of the condition. Each therapy session taking only about 10 – 20 minutes.
Common indications are for chronic muscular and tendon disorders such as:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achillodynia
- Shin splint
- Muscle sprain
- Jumpers knee
- Runners knee
- Trigger point therapy
- Trochanteric insertion tendonitis
- Piriformis syndrome
- Muscular cramps/spasm
The therapy uses a high intensity acoustic waves that interacts with the tissues of the body leading to a ripple effect of benefits. These benefits are: revascularisation (formation of new blood vessels), reduces inflammation, stimulates collagen generation, prevents the build-up of calcium and most importantly reduces pain. Stimulation of these biological mechanisms creates an optimal healing environment. As the injured area is returned to normal, functionality is restored and pain is relieved.
Side effects could occur after treatment, if any – usually appear within 2 days of the treatment having been performed, they usually fade and disappear after 3 – 5 days. The most common side effects include: reddening, swelling, pain, worsening conditions, hematoma and petechiae (red spots).
